Multitasking often feels productive because it creates the impression that several things are moving forward at once. You answer a message while reading an email, listen to a meeting while checking another document, start one task, remember another, open a new tab, and return later without fully remembering where you stopped.
By the end of the day, you may have touched many things but finished fewer than expected.
The problem is not that your brain is lazy or incapable. It is that most of what people call multitasking is actually rapid task switching. Your attention moves from one thing to another, then back again, and each switch has a cost. Even when that cost is small, it adds up across a full day.
When you move from writing an email to checking Slack, then back to the email, your brain does not simply continue from the exact point where it stopped. It needs a moment to remember what you were doing, what you planned to say, what information mattered, and what decision you had already made.

The break should also feel different from the task. Scrolling through short videos or replying to messages may feel easier than working, but it keeps your brain moving between new pieces of information. A short walk, tea, stretching, looking outside, or doing one simple physical task can give attention a cleaner reset.
