Once one explanation is formed, later information is often interpreted around it. A colleague does not reply, so you assume they are unhappy with your work. After that, every short message may seem to support the idea.
Another explanation may be equally possible: they are busy, distracted, travelling, or waiting for more information.
The first explanation feels convincing because it gives uncertainty a structure. Replacing it requires admitting that the original interpretation may have been incomplete.

What you expect from yourself can influence how you approach a task.
If you expect to fail, you may become more cautious, monitor every action, and interpret normal difficulty as proof that the task is going badly. That extra self-monitoring can make performance feel less natural.
If you expect something to be easy, you may begin with confidence but fail to prepare properly. The first difficulty can then feel surprisingly disruptive.
Helpful expectations are realistic rather than simply positive. They recognise that the task may be difficult without treating difficulty as evidence of failure.
A useful expectation might be: “This will require concentration, and I may need more than one attempt.”
That frame prepares attention without deciding the result in advance.

The goal is not to remove all expectations. That would be impossible and inefficient. The goal is to recognise when they are influencing an important judgment.

Managing expectations requires several cognitive skills. You need attention to notice conflicting details, working memory to hold more than one explanation, inhibition to resist the first conclusion, and flexibility to update your interpretation when new information appears.
