You can spend an hour staring at a problem without getting any closer to a solution.

You reread the same information, test slightly different versions of the same idea, and keep returning to the point where you became stuck. The longer you work, the more important it feels to continue. Stopping seems like giving up when the answer might be only one more attempt away.

Then you leave the desk, make something to eat, take a shower, or walk outside. A clearer idea appears when you are no longer actively trying to produce one.

The activity should be simple enough that the mind is not required to solve another complex problem.

Some people prefer silence. Others find that quiet music or being outdoors helps reduce the intensity of their current thought pattern. The specific activity matters less than the shift away from deliberate problem-solving.

Return with a different question

When you come back, avoid immediately continuing from the exact point where you stopped.

Instead, change the question. Rather than asking, “How do I make this solution work?” ask, “What would a completely different solution look like?”

  • Which part of the problem is essential?

Look at the problem from another role

Imagine looking at the task as a different person:

  • a first-time user;
  • a client;
  • a colleague unfamiliar with the project;
  • a person with less time;
  • a person who disagrees with your approach;

Each role creates different priorities.

A creator may focus on how much work has already been invested. A user may care only about whether the result is understandable. A manager may focus on risk, while a beginner may reveal which instructions are missing.
